John, I have the original G1, and a relative has the G3. G1...... When the with an extender tube mentioned by Benjamin is fitted to the G1 there is defiantly a problem with shadow from the built in flash also the extender encroaches into the view finder forcing the photographer to use back screen as a viewfinder I would image that fitting wide or Tele lenses will not help the situation though I have never tried it. Fitted with a canon EX gun the problem stops
G3....... Not played with it long enough to tell if the same problem arises what I can say is the barrel of the lens certainly encroaches into the view finder again forcing the photographer to use back screen as a viewfinder for full frame. though I notice the flash has been re designed. G1 G2 G3 & G5 all have the facility to turn off the flash. Also a "Protective" lens filter cant be fitted without fitting the extender tube. The ISO ratings on all cameras are 50-400 ISO but I have found that noise (on my G1) at 400ISO is very noticeable in low light. So much so I can get larger better quality prints out of a 7.5mb Nikon D1 at 1600ISO than out of my 9mb Canon G1 at 400ISO when used in similar Low light conditions. At 50ISO in good light the G1 camera is superb and only 3.3 mega pixels. Check for shutter lag it is about a (second from pressing the shutter to capture of the image on the G1). If you are thinking of using the camera for anything like press type work remember they take a lot more time to power up and become ready to shoot than a digital SLR. All that said I love my G1 and carry it when an SLR isn't an option. I also carry it on certain PR jobs "Just in case" its excellent and I have had images published in newspapers and prints (after interpolation via PhotoShop) up to 16x12 from it though they have always been posed shots not grab shots. If I were spending again at the G5 prices, knowing what I know now, I would check out Nikon/Fuji etc to see if they had anything similar before parting with the cash. Though I suspect the G5 may still win for me. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Paul David Drabble Freelance Editorial & PR Photography 07831 853913 0114 2468406 www.pauldaviddrabble.co.uk ----------------------------------------------------------------- ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Callan" < Subject: [PRODIG] Canon G5 > I'm considering buying a Canon G5 but have heard that when using wide angle > and flash you get a shadow from the barrel of the lens.
