I guess that's in the spirit of testing, eh?

With an LCD you preset the hardware brightness to a comfortable level
in regard to room lighting, it's the same with a CRT really, although
there you'll have the opportunity to impose a predecided value. However
Brightness on an LCD is the luminance, not the same as the brightness
control on an CRT.
Or are you talking about black level as labelled <brightness> on a CRT
screen? AFAIK there is no way to adjust that in hardware on an LCD.
It's how black is black. Leave it to the high end SW to get right.
basICColor Display gives a luminance (on a CRT that's called contrast)
for those who want it. But no black level or Brightness is provided,
they decide themselves how black black should be, and they go pretty
grey - to show all that shadow detail one might see in print.
With a CRT you are adjusting 3 guns (the RGB gains) this means you need
an overall luminance target in the SW since you could otherwise end up
with one gun at max and the screen too bright. Resulting in a lot of to
and fro.
There are no RGB gain controls on an LCD, even though some have faux ones.

indeed, and it's not present on LCD's.
