The "brightness" option on certain LCD's is very different from brightness on a CRT. Brightness on LCD's should really be labelled as "lightness". However you can hardly blame a software company that certain hardware manufactures "mislabels" Certain controls on the monitor can you?!? On all the CRT's you are asked to set the Contrast to 100% and leave it there. If you get the option on an LCD you're still asked to set it to 100%. Very few LCD monitors (I haven't seen any hence the careful put intro to this sentence) have an option to adjust Brightness (meaning the black point). Essentially a LCD is powered (lit) with a fluorescent tube. The is not way to change the colour on the white end (hence no RGB gun adjustments) and there is no way to adjust anything in the shadow region of a fluorescent tube (brightness). If you really want to know how an LCD monitor works (or a CRT for that matter) check out www.howthingswork.com. Alas it's impossible to do certain hardware adjustments on a LCD monitor. Now this doesn't incapacitate the software used to profile the monitor does it? > Surely not setting the brightness will mean your profile is viewed wrong? No not quite, and neither will setting contrast to 100% If the software is intelligent enough to figure out the amount of contrast needed, and adjust the rest in software, which is exactly what the Eye One Match software does. Kohlendorf has recently made a comparison between high end CRT's and a Apple 20+23 Cinema Display (see the archives for a link). They discovered that when calibrated with the Eye one Display the two are on par in all regards, except High end CRT's are superior in purity issues (given that on a Barco you can calibrate 25 zones on a screen and thus even out purity issues in the hardware).
