Stephanie, What a miserable experience, you've had!
I keep a second copy of Windows 2000 on my second hard drive. I also keep a full backup of the main system, at a stage where it was running sweetly, using Backup on the rescue system, so all the locked files should be backed up also. The idea is to make minor repairs, or even a rollback to an earlier working system, very much easier. When installing a new system, the only sensible thing is to reformat the HD and install again from scratch. Painful, but the results are good.
