I am not sure why you are having a difficulty, but perhaps, you could add step 3:
3. Click the Add New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers palette, then hold down Command+Shift+Option+E which will place a copy of the merged effects of the emasculated layer into this newly created layer. The difference between the originally manipulated layer and this new one can be seen by double-clicking its icon in the layers palette and you will notice that all three channels are present, perhaps this will now print as expected.
Rod, (not Rob, unless you had someone else in mind)

I have tried the methods suggested by Rob and Shangara and either way the
results are perfect on screen but when I send the document to print it comes
out in cyan and magenta only.
