Although Richard intended his reply to you to be off list (not sure why as I think it a very valid answer) I have to say that even though I am a strong advocate for OSX, I think you must tread cautiously. Your mix off hardware is a pretty good recipe for some anguish.

Any major upgrade is "a pretty good recipe for some anguish.". I've been doing this stuff since 1984, and I miss the "good ole days" <grin> for the simplicity of upgrading.....BUT, all this new stuff is so FUNCTIONAL!

I would suggest that you install another HD and install OSX on that

IF this external drive is a FireWire drive of whatever flavor.....please read MacInTouch and MacFixIt for the problems Panther has with losing data from any and ALL flavors of FireWire drive that depend on the Oxford 911 or 922 chip for translation. (Remember, a firewire connection is just one part of the interface. These drives are just standard ATA/IDE drives with the translation of interface handled by, usually, an Oxford 911 or 922 chip.)
