Just installed Panther over 10.2.6 on a Ti Powerbook 400 without a hitch; did the simple "upgrade", but not without a full backup of the drive with Carbon Copy Cloner beforehand.
No problems, but then I'm using the Powerbook mainly for digital captures out on location, internet stuff, emails etc... For my workstation (Photoshop, Quark Flextight scanning, CD burning etc...), I'm running a G4 500 DP, with OS 10.2.6 and 9.2.2. I'm not sure if it's the speed of the machine, but I find 9.2.2 to be far more responsive, especially running Photoshop 7.0.1 than under OS X. For some unexplained reason, I get the spinning beach ball a lot under OS X when running PS, and there's an annoying "lag" in the interface; subtle, but I notice it and it's irritating. Disk performance under 9.2.2 is far higher, especially with SCSI. This has effected my scratch disk which is a striped RAID. I've converted this to a Hardware ATA RAID running off a dual channel PCI card, but I don't believe you can get the same performance from it under OS X as you can 9.2.2; either RAIDS built with SCSI or ATA. I believe that SCSI is pretty dead with OS X; it really sucks (referring to disk drives). One nice thing about OS X is it's pretty rock solid; though my 9.2.2 system is now extremely stable, so it's a toss up. Memory management under OS X seems to be part of it's stability, but I think it's also part of the reason for the beachball and it's lag-ishness (hows that for a word?) Perhaps running it off a newer machine may improve things considerably; I'll have to wait for a G5 to find out for myself. Good luck. It's nice to have both systems, and be able to startup from either.
