with respect
I am running a 933 MHz G4 tower and a 500MHz G4 Ti Book, both now on Panther (I've been on OSX for 18 months now). I can hardly describe either of them as slow in any app - including PS.
It's your choice - but frankly - the incredible stability of OSX and the added functionality afforded by many of the apps olptimised to run in OSX is just incredible.
The upgrade cost is not necessarily enormous - if you would anyway upgrade to the latest software - for me the only hardware cost was a replacement flatbed scanner purchased through the Prodig for sale section on the website. (I can understand it might be more for others - but surely that is more a question of a properly planned upgrade policy - which we should all - but probably don't, have in place)
I really do not believe Adobe and Apple are making us stand to attention. I for one am very happy to take advantage of the fantastic advancements they offer us. If you are happy to remain with what has worked for you for many years - then that's fine.
I for one am relieved to progress from the problems I had with OS8, OS9, Win 95 et al.
My Os is now something that just works - I don't even think about it.

As far as I know we are all at the mercy of Adobe and Apple, they click

with OSX (and I didn't think a 1Ghz processor with 1Gig of ram was slow for
a laptop) it's still slow, and I don't subscribe to the bigger better
theory.. get a better OS so upgrade everything else, why not a new machine,
where does it end? It doesn't.
etc
