Don't be too bothered if you don't want to upgrade. I still use OS9 on a
regular basis (on the very machine I'm using at the moment)

When I'm doing a lot of photo/printing work I'll probably use X, but other
days it'll be OS9 - just like the many of my Mac business clients :-))

OK, I'll have to use X on new machines, but it'll be a new machine...

Some people will upgrade because they feel the need to be at the (b)leeding
edge, others find various new features of use. I use OSX almost exclusively
on my old G3/500 powerbook and find it odd to boot into 9 - I guess it just
depends on how you use your Mac. It seems fast enough for my mobile needs -
I'd rather not use a laptop for my serious photo editing work.

Yeah, and so does my old bit of XXXX (fill in item name as required) kit.
You try telling that to the young people of today and...

Doesn't mean I can't do better sometimes with newer stuff - and the
knowledge of how to use it.

For myself, I've found that making the modest effort to understand colour
management has improved the quality and consistency of my photography. I too
am more interested in taking pictures :-)

Depends on what my business needs/wants/can afford..

On the monitor calibration side of things -I know it's heresy- but you might
want to have a look at SuperCal for tweaking by eye. I use a spyder myself
but comparing one of my SuperCal 'by eye' profiles with one from the Spyder
showed a surprisingly good match.

SuperCal and a Windows equivalent are linked from the 'Viewing' page at the
site below. They may not be up to hardware calibration (I don't sell
hardware/software ;-)) but can be better than nothing, and I know several
people who have gotten into colour management in a more serious ($$) way
after I'd pointed them to the 'by eye' methods.

bye for now
