This is a mine field that only the brave venture into. I did once and am
still limping!!! There are whole books written about color management so a
few posts are "unlikely" to lead to the enlightenment you seek. <g>
The User Guide has a fairly good intro to color management. There are links
on my Photoshop Domain website to color management sites that have PDF's you
can download.
Just to pour petrol on a fire: if the file's saved as a JPEG or TIFF out of
the camera, it'll be in some flavour of sRGB (some cameras now tag ARGB, I
believe). So, converting it to ARGB 1998 will just saturate the colors and
"may" even cause posterization when you start editing. It's a bit like
pouring a half pint into a full glass, although not half as nice! Your
friend may have his/her reasons but if they don't understand what's
happening when you open a file, dot dot dot...
In a few words:
--If a file is in sRGB, leave it in sRGB.
--Before converting, assign a profile, if you like the look, convert it.
--If a file's in RAW format, tag it with ARGB 1998 when you output it from
your RAW converter - not output as sRGB and then convert to ARGB 1998.
The above is an imperfect mantra, you can chant it and hope it will lead to
color management Nirvana, or tell your friend to invest time in
understanding a fairly complex issue: If you don't approach it from all
directions, and you use different versions of Photoshop (two users can have
the same version but different policies and different understanding of which
is the right course to take when opening files), it's akin to a blind man
describing an elephant by feeling its tail.
