Dear Stephen

In PS 6
Go to
Edit/ Colour Settings
With Adobe 1998 set as the RGB working space
Under Colour Management Policies
Ensure that Preserve Embedded Profiles is showing in the RGB dropdown list;
That the box for Missing Profiles - Ask When Opening is checked.
When you open any image other than one in Adobe 1998 you will then get a

Profile Mismatch window that gives you the options:
Use embedded profile
Convert to current Working Space
Discard embedded profile [do not colour manage]

or a

Missing Profile window that gives you the options:
Leave as is [don't colour manage]
Assign working RGB
Assign profile [dropdown list] then convert to working RGB

You should be able to take it from there...

Cheers

Julia
