Firewire is much faster - USB2 is only on some of the latest Macs. USB1 will
take a very long while with a big CF card or microdrive.

I use a card reader with my Powerbook - saves on the camera batteries

You will probably not want to involve iPhoto in things, it's not really
intended for higher end work (it is a great program though - my Mum loves
it).

iPhoto does not handle raw files and last time I checked was not really into
colour management :-))  I've not checked the latest incarnation under 10.3
however. Just downloading the files should cause no changes.
