Right. the camera manufactures a small preview image of the picture you take and save as RAW. Look at your Flash Card contents. You'll see them.
The thumbnail is the image you see in your little LCD screen right after pushing the shutter button.

Sounds to me as if what you were opening in PS6 and 7 wasn't the RAW file, but
the Thumbnail of the RAW file.

Check it out. RAW files are quite large.

I haven't a clue what you mean - what thumbnails?

Raw files are what you make them; I was referring to the raw file opening in
these ways-

a. file>open>select image to open it

b. drag a file to the PS icon to open it

c. hit the PS button in Capture3.5 after processing raw image to open it
(this is my usual technique)

My D1X doesn't do side by side jpegs/raw-in-one like Canon cameras do -

The file size of raw files, if I allow PS to open direct (a or b technique
from above) is only about 18mb, default sized up to 8x12in. D1X Raw files
are 7.7mb unprocessed, and obviously go bigger than 18mb with the correct
raw processing software, non?

Are you talking about the file browser thumbnails?
