hi Bill; Er..I do actually know what a raw file is!! The fact is I only download my 'raw' files. I then process them. At no time during this process have I come across any D1X "thumbnails" within said folder or otherwise. Yes I see them on the camera - but I know I'm not downloading thumbnails to my Mac! Maybe my camera firmware upgrade is to blame - who knows? I don't. The reason why I asked if you were on a PC is that I noticed that on a friends PC a whole lot of twin-named files appeared when he was downloading his Canon files- but this was 'pre' the ability to create Jpegs and Raw simutaneously, ergo these may have been what you might possibly have been referring to?? Let's not worry - but there are NO thumbnails on my CF cards.(!)
List mom will be slightly preturbed by now so.. - actually what I originally was curious about was whether Photoshop CS does process raw files on it's own without the need for the external software to do it(like Nikon Capture) SO! Now I know: ACR is included. I was never in any doubt as to whether I was/not accidently trying to work on "thumbnails" and yes a raw file is akin to a neg - know that too. Can ACR work from within PS7 though without fuss? hi Patrick; Yes, large to small is the only way to go (in terms of file sizes) as is keeping a large master image on the HD, for future use. I haven't tried the 6mp to 10mp conversion simlpy because I am getting very crisp worthy images so far to 10x12in. I also don't open files directly (using NEF raw plug-in) in PS and interpolate by upping file size, and subsequently save as ie; PSD files. So really, only I have one way which is at present doing well.. through the Nikon Capture sw. Is there a better way to do this? If for instance somebody knew that using PS7 with the NEF plug-in was the same or better, than I would bin the capture sw and do it in PS. (Just to recap- I have used my D1X for a long time, and shoot raw a lot; I am living in yesteryear OS9.2, but PS7 works fine for me, D1X is efficient and I am used to shooting fashion with it, 3 models at 15 shots a day with several downloads and lots of CF card juggling. Nikon capture has I found, a good batch raw process with CM included.) and - Thanks you guys!
