Dear list,

My client (also a photographer) collects historical photographs and
makes 10x8 copies of them. I have produced some large digital
photographic prints from high res scans of 11000x8000 pixels, and he is
happy. He asked us to make 6x4 prints from the same scans, which I did
by reducing the image in Photoshop, and having prints made by a digital
photographic printer (Noritsu @ 250ppi I think).

The ca-ca hit the cooling device when he tried to make (35mm) copy negs
of the 6x4s, in order to make the 10x8s himself. Of course there is not
enough info in the 6x4 and the result is unacceptable. (I know, I
know...I cautioned against this.)

To my questions:
If you send 1000ppi to the printer, doesn't it just resample down to
printer resolution anyway?
>From the original digital image, what print size print, print type and
printer resolution will give the most detail?
Is there any higher resolution on the printed page from Pictography, or
dye sublimation, or ink jet?

Thanks,
Tim Wheeler
