I imagine it vary with the type of printer, but you can see evidence of the
resampling if you create single pixel staircases, horizontal/vertical ...
e.g.,

(the gaps being single pixel too) ... and print at a variety of PPI
settings. For example, many claim the "native" res for Epson printers to be
360ppi because they can see absolutely no evidence of resampling if 360ppi
is sent to the printer.
Whatever the results show you, no one has yet claimed there is a real
difference for photographic images (leastwise for Epsons) ... ie., simply
asking Photoshop to print at any specific size, and allowing the printer
software to resample accordingly.
Regarding dye-sub printers, similar tests should be made with respect to the
printer's "DPI" ... e.g., if you create alternating lines at its DPI, do you
really see distinct lines? (which may as much to do with the media as the
printer)
