Easy to test. Just take that TIF or Jpeg file and "catalog" it in your choice of image database. If nothing shows up in the catalog in the standard IPTC fields, then the data is not "within" the field in the image (at least the IPTC field). My guess is that it's still accessing it from the sidecar.
As I explained in my quick check, I threw away the sidecar file, and have subsequently even emptied the trash (because OS X seems to be able to communicate with the dead - you can open files that reside in the trash, which is scary.)
I then dragged one of the test files into iView Media Pro (Classic OS version) and it shows up.
I think it is more durable than you think.
Shangara asked whether I did anything different than create a template then append it to a selected file; No. I also had keep sidecar files with master file.
The HowTo to which I referred was to embed a large embossed, but unfilled copyright symbol in a file making it subtle yet difficult to retouch out, and in keeping with the question I was answering, show how to ensure that the (Option/Alt-G) symbol appeared in the titlebar of the image window within Photoshop CS; as well as appear in the metadata pane of the File Browser.
If I have also set something that ensures it works for me, but is not universal, then this is unintentional and I would be happy to be told what that is.
