FWIW, I think your tips is good and will work "universally." It seems to me,
David is referring to RAW files, which require the appended/replaced
metadata to be placed in a sidecar XMP file but if the file is TIFF or JPEG,
etc, Photoshop embeds the data in the file. So no need to fear the metadata
being separated from the file.
