Sorry for the late posting on this -- just caught up on my reading.

On the question of whether an inverter should be pure sine wave, I did have two mobile
phone chargers fried by my old inverter. I thought to start with I just had a duff
charger, but then the same thing happened to another one so I don't think it was
coincidence. 

I suspect that the cheaper square wave or modified sine wave models have harmonics 
which
can somehow upset the electronics of the chargers, but I now use a pure sine wave 
inverter
(from Maplins) for my laptop and so far haven't had any problems.
