That is what they are for, but I do not know how effective they are, how reliable they are and how long they would last in this type of application: I think they actually do little more than help reduce spikes. (Very short duration surges) A UPS does everything a surge protector does, and a great deal more, and, with input power limitation, could enable you to take several times the input power for short durations.
