Looking forward for an expected better advice, I would recommend to set the Safe Energy Config Panel to never sleep or, if you can't really do without the automatic sleeping mode set it for the screen, keeping the processor awake. You have too the option to set the HDs running or not.
For my own I rarely set the automatic sleeping mode, only when I am out for a long time willing to keep the comp sleeping while the maid is snooping around ;-)
There is a question I planed to ask here as I didn't found the answer elsewhere: it is a common knowledge that you have to wait at least half an hour before calibrate a screen and during this hour you have to avoid your screen set in sleeping mode. Do we have to wait for accurate colours after the screen had been, automatically or not, set to the sleeping mode?
Best regards.

The glitch is this. I was working on an image recently and had a reference book beside me, being completely absorbed by a particular chapter reulted in the Mac being inactive for some time.
