increasingly people are asking for jobs too be done digitally, This is purely on costs grounds.

Hi Chris
Just thought I'd point out that the general consensus amongst most prodig shooters, as far as it appears, and the way I work, is that it is a bad idea to provide digitally captured images at a cheaper price than traditional film captured ones. I'm sure there will be some stuff in the archives about digital shooting & post production costs. I believe you'll be shooting yourself in the foot (and the feet of others!) if you go down this route. Please don't do it!

Clients need to be informed that the cost of digital equipment, the learning involved in using it all (including software and digital imaging theory, such as colour management) - the post-shoot downloading, editing of images, production of contact sheets or web-pages, etc, all come at a price to us, which should be reflected in our fees and costs. There may be no film & processing, nor scanning & spotting costs, but that is because we, as photographers, have absorbed those costs by investing in expensive digital equipment and taking the necessary time and trouble to learn how to operate our systems.

I tell my clients that I can shoot digitally or on film (I prefer digitally) but the final cost is about the same to them. I always try to push for the digital, as it saves them time and trouble, and I wish to recoup some of my investment.
A basic charging system could be along the lines of:

Shoot fee
Digital photographic capture (extra charge)
Post-shoot digital handling (downloading, initial selection & editing)
Placement of images on a web-page for final selection by client OR production of contact sheets
Basic retouching /colour correction & system work of final selection of digital images.
Target prints
Burning to CD of final files.

I don't think I'm in the minority on this issue. Any other thoughts?

Best wishes
