I bought a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D which is the same drive that Apple call a SuperDrive. I fitted mine in the upper front bay of my Dual G4, moving the original Combo drive to the lower bay. It took all of twenty minutes, and all that was needed was a screwdriver the G4 manual and a small number of expletives when I bashed my thumb <g>. It is necessary to remove the front edge of the tray (it just clips on) in order for the tray to clear the opening.
It is actually recognized by OS 10.3.3 as a SuperDrive. I bought it from MacWarehouse for 75 GBP.
If you do need one as an external drive it could always be mounted in a separate drive case. It may also be available as a Pioneer external drive unit.
