The iPod is at it's heart a portable, firewire hard drive.

The problem highlighted in that article is due to the user's error, and only
affects the behaviour of the iPod in relation to iTunes.

My iPod, now 3 years old, has seen 2 LaCie pocket drives come and go. All
hard drive fail eventually, one has to bear this in mind when using them in
critical situations.
