There are several applications that allow you to transfer the content of an iPod disc back to your HDD. I know of a few (Mac), Pod Util and Escape Pod but have also used one called PodMaster. I had a problem with a Mk 1 release iPod a few years ago and had to investigate how to extract all the content after iTunes inexplicably wouldn't recognise it. There are other utilities which will allow you to examine the disc and retrieve data be it music, images or what have you - a quick flick through some of the dedicated iPod sites or forums will reveal the most popular for your OS.
