Thanks for replying.
I've tried swapping ports. I have a USB card along with the two ports that came with the machine. Other devices don't seem to have problems in the same ports. I just tried a powered hub as you suggested, but this doesn't seem to work either! It's strange that I can get one printer to work at a time in OSX 10.3.4. If I could work out how to turn off the colour management , I could at least finish the job I started yesterday!
