Given that most of the time you will probably want to use vertical shift on a portrait shot of a tall building, if you twist the section with the knob to 90 degrees it will avoid the bump anyway.

Bob Smith mentions the only problem being physical interference of the shift knob with the body bulge, and I've talked with people who've dealt with it in exactly the manner mentioned by Bob - just have the knob removed and turned down. Don't see why anyone shouldn't be perfectly prepared to do this.
