That's because Epson have the customer in mind, unlike LaCie! Epson do not
want to confuse you by giving you a Firewire AND a USB cable because you may
not know which one goes where! Also, they have no way of knowing whether you
want to plug the printer into a computer or use it as a doorstop. So, by not
providing connecting cables, they provide you with infinite choices. I call
that good business practice. Your mileage may vary. ;-)
