In speed terms USB is slowest, followed by Firewire 400, USB 2 and then Firewire 800.
I too would recommend the La Cie range as they can also be set up to have cross platform compatibility (call MacDrive - http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/ )
If you go for these make sure you pick the models with the extra fast transfer times, to take full advantage of Firewire 800.

Just wondering if any listmembers are using internal drives externally? I've heard that internal drives can be housed in Firewire or USB2 cases which then just plug into the appropriate port on the computer. Once the drive(s) are full they are stored and swopped with a new one. Presumably over time this provides a price advantage over standard external drives.
