PS CS so far can only (did I just type ONLY!) use up to 2GB of RAM, we willPhotoshop does not want to allocate more than 1703 Mb ram to itself while The Mac is telling me that I have 4+ Gb available
Can this be altered?
have to wait and see if Adobe change this on their next version update.
It's not Adobe that are imposing this limit. It's Apple. Here's last September's definitive answer (with my questions) from Marc Pawlinger at Photoshop:

Yes, Photoshop reports all the numbers based on the maximum 2GB of RAM it
could use. The "available RAM" is the RAM available for use -by
Photoshop-.

That is in-memory size, and could exceed 2GB due to compression.

That is supposed to show you the total amount installed, and is
apparently doing so. It doesn't mean the Finder is able to use that much.

Some Windows apps can be built to address 3GB, but in general all Windows
app running on consumer Intel CPUs have the same limitation. 64 bit Windows
OSes running on the Itanium and other 64 bit CPUs may be able to address
more.
