Its on a special partition that is only used for the page file.

The important point is that the paging file is on a different _physical_ drive to the operating system.
If the partition shares the same HDD as the C drive (operating system etc etc) then there will be no benefit because that HDD still has to work just as hard.
A partition devoted to the paging file but on a separate and less busy physical drive - say where you store data or images - would be much better since access to the file is less likely to be queued behind other tasks that the HDD is performing.
