Dear Pro-DIG list

Three weeks ago, I made a posting on this forum titled "UV FILTERS - BAD
SCIENCE AND URBAN MYTHS". This was made in response to a growing irritation
with amateurs pontificating on and on about an important subject they knew
precious little about, and I was subsequently shot down and belittled. Well,
not *really* belittled, I am made of sterner stuff than that, but it got me
thinking about the way this list works. We have approximately 50 regular
contributers with about 1600 lurkers in the background, all cherry-picking
digital gems while contributing nothing in return. This really sucks
bigtime.

In fact I was stunned at the ignorance of one particular poster who failed
to grasp that I only contribute to the list on the basis of first principles
of knowledge. In other words, I think (and think again) before I speak. As a
photographer, there is very little that I have not done or cannot do, which
is not the same as saying I have done it all, but I have done one heck of a
lot of photography and digital imaging in my lifetime. So I quietly growl in
your general direction.

Lets face it, the cutting edge is somewhere else, and somehow we all know
this. What was once arcane knowledge has become commonplace, and there are a
whole raft of issues concerning digital practice which are never addressed,
due to the confines of the list guidelines, which nobody seems to read.

I think it is time to move on, and create two lists - one for amateurs, one
for professionals.

Remember, the acronym for this list is Pro-DIG - short for Professional
Digital Imaging Group. We need an Am-Dig for amateurs and I am NOT being
derogatory in saying this, it just needs to be said. Otherwise, what is the
point?

Fully expecting to get booted off:)
