Just bought a MacBeth chart (the original 24 swatch variety) today, but
thinking about the whole issue of white/grey balance and colour casts etc, I
just wonder if it matters a tinkers' **** what white balance is selected at
the point of shooting as (by definition) the RAW file is a pure record of
what the sensor actually sees without any adjustment (I've heard it called a
digital negative). If this is the case, providing exposure is correct on the
MacBeth chart, I can see that the grey swatches would provide a means of
obtaining neutrality and determining tonal range. If, however, the selected
white balance on the camera acts like a means of changing the "film" type
(eg like "tungsten" or "daylight" film) even on RAW image files, then the
correct choice of white balance on the camera must be useful in eliminating
the bulk of any colour cast at the outset, leaving you to "fine tune" the
image netrality, tonal range and colour balance in the RAW conversion
process, or even later in Photoshop.
