Malcolm, I assume you are on PC. On the Mac, I make the session folder first and then insert the card. The machine and software detects that I have inserted the card and asks me if I want to import the files from the card into that session and at the same time if I want to rename them (I don't think that includes the first 3 digits which I assume is the "folder count" number). The interface is slightly different on the PC - or at least it was with previous versions - but I have found that this makes for a quite proficient workflow. If you then move the entire folder to a different machine it keeps everything in the same folder, including the allocated trash folder, raw files and processed folder. You then just click in the relevant session document from within that folder and it opens C1 at that session - its made the archiving process a whole lot simpler - for me anyway. The session document also seems to keep a record of any of the relevant exposure, colour and contrast changes you have made to the individual files. Flop around in the software for a while longer and you'll get the hang of the colour management as well...
