I've had a look into techniques for B/W conversion and have collected as many as possible at: <http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/bwfromcol.html> There are one or two quite complex techniques, but for general use I like the Dr Brown 2 H/S layer technique or just converting to LAB and ditching the a/b channels. You can tweak the H/S technique further by altering the range of colours that are changed.
