Many thanks to all repondants on and off list. In the end I managed to 
reset the printer using a variation on the published methods. For 
anyone with a 2000p - keep this message because one day your printer 
too will decide that the reservoirs for ink waste are full, and stop 
responding.

I turned the power on while holding down the paper feed and ink change 
buttons, released them both and pressed the ink change button for about 
15 secs. The printer lurched back into life and is fine. I did this 
yesterday as well but it hadn't worked. Today i did it with the USB 
cable plugged in, this may or may not have helped, but at least it 
worked.
