Incidentally, the NEFs - from a D70 - were 5.7MB: DNG conversions were 4.7MB
I compared D100 NEF (Capture 4) & DNG in Photoshop, and they look the same, but the DNG is larger in area and 240ppi instead of 300ppi (may be able to tweak the settings) and DNG 4.4Mb against 4.8Mb for the NEF.
