I've had a quick look at the differences between the EXIF data in the NEF and DNG formats: <http://prometheus.idea-digital.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=294> Adobe have made it nice and easy to retrieve the EXIF data storing it as XML. This also means that you can retrieve it from the CLI without any dedicated software. The only stuff that didn't seem to make it through the conversion was information about the camera settings for Hue adjustment, Sharpening & Noise Reduction. All the other relevant shooting data seems OK.
