I'm not clear what you're referring to when you say iView relies on helper programs. Is this a difference between the Mac and Windows versions?
The only time I can know of that iView uses helpers is to open a piece of media in its native application for editing. To me, that's not a problem, it's a necessity and other than that, viewing any type of media I've come across is done inside iView.
Personally, while Portfolio is a good, feature-rich program, I find it very awkward in actual use.
