There's no limit to my ability to be dumb - but I just trashed my (never knowingly used) Nikonview. Emptied the trash, searched for Nikonview & found it not (natch). Then I made a new Iview catalog, dragged in some NEFs & they all show up fine. I'm using Iview 2.6, maybe it needed Nikonview in a previous life?
