Two things to consider when you are posting. Is my post actually adding something to the discussion? Have I checked to see if someone has already answered this question in the way I am going to (did we REALLY need that many replies to the copyright symbol question?)
This often happens because the mail list software can take time to distribute the emails - a time lag will therefore mean lots of overlapping responses.
I suppose that is why other photography sites such as DPReview/Rob Galbraith etc are forum based.

Regarding the list - I am at most semi-pro but have lots of knowledge and experience in the digital imaging field - I also know my way around software, Macs, Unix and PCs, HTML, Web Design and 'stuff'. Sometimes I will have useful responses.
Hopefully I can add to knowledge on certain topics. If this list were to go more pro (ie: 80% of earnings) I wouldn't quailfy and perhaps some of my knowledge, where I can be useful, would be lost. If, as mentioned already, a pro has a problem they may be able to get a quick low noise answer by posting to the list, and I may be able to answer it.
Is it worth shutting off that avenue?
I often get frustrated with the people on this list who are rude or unhelpful - sharing knowledge is what this list is all about. I recently asked questions about some RAW conversion software and received some interesting information. However I also received a pretty rude answer along the lines of "I'm right, I know best". That sort of thing is not overly helpful.
Generally this list is a fantastic resource, but questions about copyright symbols could be solved much more quickly by searching on Google. Perhaps the listmum needs to add this to his weekly message?
cheers
