Actually, the ads on something like the Margulis Color Theory list are slightly smaller than the ad you apply to your posts. I don't mind either. Just a handful of plain text lines at the bottom of the post. I monitor maybe a dozen Yahoo based lists. They work very well and are only loaded with ads if you choose to receive html messages.
