As it happens, as my PC for uploading only was Windows XP home, there were no solutions to the MAC PC exchange. So question's still open :-)
OK the answer in terms of straight networking is probably to go to XP Pro (it is 'better' for what you are trying to achieve) but it is still possible in XP Home.
I have an XP Pro setup where I right-click a folder on the PC and one of the options is "Sharing and Security..." > Select Share this folder > Give the folder a name. Set the permissions to "Allow" for all cases.
Then on the Mac connect from the finder Apple-K then type smb://<ipaddress>/<shared folder name> and you then enter a username and password. (When you log into the PC use the Administrator (or main user/password) username and password) (otherwise you have to set up new users!)
The folder should then mount.
If you want to do it the other way then you can by Allowing Windows File Sharing in the System Preferences
Then on the PC open Windows Explorer (right-click the Start button) type in
\\<Mac Computer Name>\<username>\<folder path>
This might be the way to do it from the PC (because the Mac is more likely to be open to the idea).
Beer went down very well, as it does most evenings now :-)
Excellent!! :-)
