But this is what a politician *does.* I am not merely being flippant here. I have history. I was the lowest-level politician ever, elected to our small town (pop. 900) city council. There were issues I was concerned about, and made the case for them well enough to get elected. While in office, I learned of some other unsavory stuff going on by members of our town's most powerful group. My daring to merely question their actions made me their Public Enemy #1. I didn't succeed in restoring balance to these issues in my first term, as 3/5 council members were in their "bloc." I really wanted to finish the job, and I thought that there was a good possibility that a new council member that was not-of-their-block would get elected. I would never get reelected with the big bloc solidly against me unless I pandered to another group by fudging a couple of my positions. Not to sound self-righteous, because I was really sick of the Council and chose not to run for reelection. But if I had, it was really tempting to pander a bit. It was an easy rationalization to fudge "so I could finish the job."
