Aside from paying for the computer hardware as a service; rather than
owning it yourself, the cloud is really just a wrapper around what
already exits within the underlying OS in which the cloud exists. All
the tool are already there to create VMs, database servers, email
servers, backup and restore services, office suites, web servers, VPN
connects, ftp servers, etc.

To use an annalogy, its like using a framework to create a VFP
applicatgion, rather than using the tools that come with VFP directly.
LOL Why would I want to use the cloud to backup my data, for example,
when it is so much faster, convenient, and safer to do it using the
tools that come with LInux within the local network. For example, I can
create a backup directory in one of the Linux boxes in the local
network, and allow other Linux computers on the network to mount the
drive using NFS. The mounted drive then appears as a directory within
the file tree of the local computers and is available for backup at
speed reaching 1000 mbs from the LAN, as opposed to backing up across
the internet at speed between 3 to 10 megs per second with many more
errors depending on the weather conditions and other interference/
downtime/lost connects, etc.
