I ended up choosing a 15" Macbook Pro with 16 Gb and 512 Gb SSD.
I spent more money than I expected (about $2500), but when I priced
out similar Windows devices, I didn't think the premium was too big
and since I'm on my workstation up to 16 hours/day, I felt that any
improvement in my productivity and quality of life were worth the
additional cost. Let me confirm, in caps, THE QUALITY OF LIFE
improvements have been wonderful and worth every penny.
Everything else has been a bonus.
All good points and well-thought out. I agree the Air is seductive, as
are all the Mac designs.
My choice in laptops has ALWAYS cost $3000-ish, whether it's the
top-of-the-line Dell (Outlet) or Lenovo (Outlet). Over the 3-5 year
lifetime of the laptops, the difference in price and the improved
reliability and QUALITY OF LIFE have always been worth it.
I spent more money than I wanted on my 15" retina-display MacBook Pro
too, but it worked out to just $223/mo. for 18 months at 0% interest.
Well, well worth it.
