Malcolm,
Glad you made the right choice and as you are now saying, it is worth every
penny as long as you get the right spec machine. I have added in the 3 year
Applecare as it really does mean peace of mind worldwide coupled with the fact
(stated previously) that you get a really saleable machine after 2 years that
hasn't devalued much at all and still has 12 months warranty.

I traded off the 16Gb ram this time for 8Gb with the Retina and 512Gb SSD. I am
more than happy but must say that the Retina, although excellent in every
aspect is not too dissimilar from the last non retina in terms of actual as
opposed to perceived quality.

A little like watching HDTV, in that when you have watched it for 10 minutes or
so it disappears from thought and is no different to a standard display, so
doing it again now I would go for non retina but with 16Gb of ram, although 8GB
with the i7 seems more than man enough to make everything fly. Just as a
passing thought, VMWare is my choice for virtualization as it seems still to be
a better integrated product than Parallels (I have both).

Dave

Hi Ted,

I was initially *seduced* by the light weight and slightly longer battery life
of the Macbook Air.

But, at the urging of Dave Crozier, I really thought about the limitations of
the Macbook Air including a max 8 Gb RAM vs. 16 Gb RAM, a dual vs. quad core, a
13 vs. 15" display and, at the time, the lack of a Retina display. The tradeoff
was about an additional pound in weight, an additional 2" in size, and about 2
hours less battery time. Note: The new Macbook Air's have a Retina display but
this wouldn't change my mind.

Having used both the Air (without Retina) and Pro, I can confirm the tradeoffs
in choosing the Pro were well worth it for me.

I ended up choosing a 15" Macbook Pro with 16 Gb and 512 Gb SSD.
I spent more money than I expected (about $2500), but when I priced out similar
Windows devices, I didn't think the premium was too big and since I'm on my
workstation up to 16 hours/day, I felt that any improvement in my productivity
and quality of life were worth the additional cost. Let me confirm, in caps,
THE QUALITY OF LIFE improvements have been wonderful and worth every penny.
Everything else has been a bonus.

Feel free to reach to out to me offline if you have any specific questions.
