Gene,

What they found was exactly what is going on...people have a "better way" (scan to notepad, type string in) even though it sometimes causes errors. When that is pointed out, they just say "well, I'll stop making mistakes." Oooookay....

This has been happening for many different scanners...L2808 wired scanners, PM8300 Datalogic wireless scanners, and WorthData 5100s. Again, this is not a new problem, it has been a struggle for well over a decade. It just gets worse from time to time as employees turn over. Warehouse staff is not a really stable environment.

Yep, tried that first thing, along with frank discussions with the users asking "why?" This has been a problem for years now, and the issue comes and goes as new employees cycle through. Management even installed wireless rechargeable hand-held scanners on multiple workstations that are located near the work/processing area...there's no reason anyone in management can come up with. They even tried moving a VP of operations to the warehouse processing office for a couple of months last summer to watch (from 8 to 5 at least) and see what was "really" happening.

     And what was found?

The only thing that makes sense, in the end-user's defense, is that they prefer to move boxes around for all their orders that need to be processed, then when the boxes are stacked up they go and do all their computer work for all their orders that need to be processed (instead of processing one order from pulling boxes to paper work to completion of order.) But we're talking personal preference here...the distance from the computer to the box staging area is about 12 feet.

Personal preference is very powerful thing.

Are the scanners accurate? Because I have been unable to find additional work in IT after my hours were cut, I have been working part-time doing inventory counting. I use a scanner a lot. 1) Misscans can happen. (What is read is not valid. A retry usually works.) 2) Sometimes, the scan gives trouble. I find that the light level can make a big difference. After trying, say, a half dozen times, I just enter the number in by hand. Maybe, the users are doing this.
