You need to have your desktop system configured so you developer and test your php code on your desktop computer, then you upload the app to the web server using ftp. For configuration you can use ssh to get a command window on the server. I'm assuming you are using a hosted Linux web server and a Linux or Windows desktop computer. The desktop computer would need to have a IIS or apache web server for testing your app.
