        Of course, not getting enough sleep the night before can have a  
much, much more pronounced effect than having smoked a joint a month  
ago. Same thing goes for a person dealing with a shaky marriage, or a  
sick child, etc. Depression is much more commonplace and can likewise  
impact performance, but that doesn't show up in a drug test, either.

        The problem with these tests is that they appear to give you useful  
information, but really don't give you what you are looking for. You  
might catch one out of a hundred potential safety situations, and in  
the process lose several valuable workers. You also get a false sense  
of safety, because you're missing all of the other potential problems  
that can affect performance.
